Testa Challenge

“The open innovation challenge where technology for bioprocess is boosted to new levels.”

Testa Challenge is the annual opportunity for startups to test and evaluate their innovative technologies on bioprocesses. The selected participants are invited to the Testa Center in Uppsala, to explore how their technology fits into the manufacturing of biopharmaceuticals and the related bioprocesses.
“The concept is inspired by hackathons and open innovation concepts. We are inviting companies to integrate, test and verify their innovations in a fully-funded standard bioproduction workflow“, says Jesper Hedberg, CEO of Testa Center.

Testa Challenge speeds up the technical development
The next Testa Challenge will take place during Q1 2023 and Jesper Hedberg says that he is looking forward to the event with extremely high expectations: “The technical level of the applications we had here the last time was really astounding. I’m amazed by all the cool stuff that is out there and I see no reason why we wouldn’t reach those levels next year as well.” Jesper Hedberg means that Testa Challenge has an important role in the life science sector considering the extremely fast development of new types of treatments and molecules.
“The development is actually so fast that the tables are turned, meaning that the biological development is ahead and the technique is struggling to keep up. Testa Challenge is one way to speed up the technical development within bioprocesses.”

Cross boarder communication is one of the main objectives
According to Jesper Hedberg, digitalization promises great advances for the future in all kinds of areas, including science and manufacturing. However, for it to really take off, cross boarder communication between biology and computer scientists needs to get better.
“This is one of the main objectives of Testa Challenge - communication! I envision that Testa Challenge and this hackathon-like way of working will be a thing for the future. It’s both sustainable, financially and environmentally, and fruitful for verifying innovations in the bioprocessing space. Being together in the lab during the Testa Challenge weeks really is the thrill for me. Seeing all that knowledge transferring happening on the fly and leading to new inventions is what makes me happy.”

About Testa Center

Testa Center is a non-profit company owned by Cytiva. Testa Center is a major initiative between the Swedish government and Cytiva to secure the growth of the life science industry and its manufacturing capabilities. The main objective of Testa Center is to bridge the gap from discovery to industrialization. The center offers businesses and academia globally a modern, pilot-scale testbed for projects and education in the production of biological products e.g., monoclonal antibodies, peptides, protein, vaccine, and viral vectors (non-GMP, up to Bio-safety level 2 and 500 liters). In this flexible facility, assisted by the experienced staff, users can perform a wide variety of projects, including scale-up of parts of a process, or a complete process from frozen cell bank vial to purified protein.

The Testa Centers three pillars are; verify innovation, accelerate innovation, and secure excellence
